Joanne Hannah “Joni” Petersen

Joanne Hannah “Joni” Thornton Petersen (nee: Thornton) passed away peacefully on Monday, June 1, 2026 at her residence. She was born in Lincoln, NE to the late Florence (nee: Wolfe) and Arthur Thornton and was a long-time Bayonne resident.  She was a licensed nurse practitioner prior to retirement, working at Jersey City Medical Center and Bayonne Medical Center for over 30 years.

Joanne is survived by her loving children, Christopher Petersen, Blues Canales, and Sandra Petersen; her cherished grandchildren, Autumnn Petersen and Adrianna, Blues and Joseph Canales; and her dear siblings, Edgar, Junior, Naomi, Blossom and Violet.

The funeral will be under the direction of Bayonne Memorial Home, Inc.  Services will be held next week at the Santee Sioux Indian Reservation in Lindy, Nebraska.  Joanne will then be laid to rest at Howe Creek Cemetery.
